Maldives Ends MVR 175,000 Office Allowance for Former Presidents
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has signed legislation to eliminate the monthly MVR 175,000 allowance for former presidents, previously used to cover their office expenses. This allowance was part of a financial benefits package introduced in 2009. The new law, unanimously passed by Parliament, also denies financial perks to former presidents serving a second term or holding other state roles and removes state-provided security for those residing abroad. Additionally, the legislation introduces a MVR 30,000 monthly allowance for former vice presidents and medical expense coverage, with the same restrictions on state roles. The government can now adjust these allowances during economic crises without parliamentary approval. Critics have long viewed such perks as wasteful.
