Maldives Ends MVR 175,000 Office Allowance for Former Presidents
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has signed new legislation to eliminate the MVR 175,000 monthly office allowance for former presidents, previously funded by the state budget. This allowance was part of a financial package introduced in 2009. The bill, sponsored by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, was unanimously approved by Parliament last week and ratified by President Muizzu on Saturday. The law also prevents former presidents from receiving financial perks if they hold another state role and denies state-funded security for those residing abroad. Additionally, the legislation introduces a MVR 30,000 monthly allowance and medical expense coverage for former vice presidents, under similar conditions. The government retains the authority to adjust these allowances during economic crises without parliamentary oversight.
