Maldives Establishes Robust Cybersecurity Framework to Attract Global Fintech Platforms
World ·
The Maldives is now prepared to provide comprehensive cybersecurity services for international financial technology platforms, including major providers like PayPal, according to the Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Ihusaan.
Speaking on the "Trade Desk" podcast, Minister Ihusaan detailed the government's "Maldives 2.0" policy, a strategic blueprint for the nation's digital transformation. He emphasized that securing the country's cyberspace is a critical priority as the government clears the way for new fintech solutions to enter the local market.
To support this transition, the government has already established a dedicated Cybersecurity Agency, a Cyber-Operation Centre, and a Security Operations Centre within the police force. Minister Ihusaan confirmed that these bodies are fully operational and capable of delivering the high-level security services required by foreign fintech providers.
“The Ministry and its affiliated agencies are now ready to deliver the necessary cyber-security services at the national level and to offer immediate assistance whenever needed,” the Minister stated.
To maintain these standards, the Ministry has implemented rigorous requirements for telecommunications operators and network solution providers. All entities operating within this space will undergo regular audits to ensure strict compliance with national security protocols, preventing vulnerabilities that could compromise the financial ecosystem.
The arrival of global platforms like PayPal is expected to be a catalyst for the local economy, providing entrepreneurs and digital creators with unprecedented access to international markets. Minister Ihusaan urged the nation's youth to capitalize on these new opportunities, noting that a secure digital environment is the foundation upon which innovative businesses can grow and the digital economy can expand responsibly.
By aligning legal frameworks with operational capabilities, the Maldives aims to position itself as a secure hub for digital finance in the region, ensuring that the shift toward a cashless and connected economy does not come at the cost of national security.
