With the commencement of the Zakat Act on 1 January 2026, the Maldives has taken significant strides towards reinforcing its national Zakat system. Approved by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on 6 December 2025, the Act establishes a legal framework in accordance with Islamic principles, defining the types of Zakat, individuals obligated to pay, and property subject to Zakat. Under this Act, the Maldives Zakat House has been established as an agency under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, alongside the formation of the nine-member Zakat Council. The council includes representatives from key institutions such as the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the Supreme Council of Islamic Fatwa, the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Maldives Monetary Authority, and the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority, along with Zakat experts appointed by the President. The council’s primary role is to provide strategic guidance to the Maldives Zakat House, ensuring transparent and effective management of Zakat resources. Its inaugural meeting focused on strengthening the operational framework of the Maldives Zakat House. The government highlighted that the council will enhance the administrative capacity of the Zakat system through technical expertise, aiming to make Zakat-related services more accessible to the public. This marks a pivotal step in ensuring the effective implementation of the Zakat Act and addressing existing challenges in Zakat management.
