Maldives Expands Psychiatric Services Amid Rising Mental Health Crisis, Says Health Minister Nazim

Health ·
Health Minister Abdullah Nazim has identified mental illness as the most significant challenge facing the Maldives' health sector today. Speaking on SSTV’s Baaru Hathareh program, Nazim highlighted the increasing prevalence of mental health issues, which has led to long queues for treatment and become a major concern for many seeking care. He noted that this trend is part of a global pattern, particularly affecting adolescents. To address this, the government is prioritizing the expansion of psychiatric services across the country. Nazim emphasized the importance of building a society less vulnerable to mental health problems through exercise, workplace safety, family safety, and access to support systems. The administration has established a 24-hour mental health helpline, which is already widely used. Efforts are underway to increase the number of psychiatrists and strengthen mental health departments in Malé and the atolls. Early intervention is crucial, and the government is working to ensure timely access to support. Notably, Noonu Atoll Hospital has recently begun offering psychiatric services, with plans to expand such services to other regions.
