Maldives Expands Subsidized Fuel Access to 13 Locations for Local Fishermen

Politics ·
The Maldivian government has expanded its subsidized fuel program for fishermen to 13 locations across the archipelago, adding nine new sites to ensure the industry remains viable amidst global economic volatility. Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam announced the expansion during a press conference held by the Special Cabinet Committee. The committee was established by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to address the domestic impacts of escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have driven up global oil prices. To date, the subsidy program has supplied over 1.1 million liters of fuel to the fishing community. Minister Shiyam emphasized that the government's primary goal is to maintain fishing operations and prevent boats from remaining docked due to prohibitive costs. Efforts are currently underway to extend affordable fuel access to three additional atolls, aiming for nationwide coverage for all licensed vessels. Beyond the immediate operational costs for boat owners, the Minister highlighted the ripple effect of rising energy prices. He noted that high oil costs do not only burden fishing families but create broader economic pressure for the entire population through increased costs of goods and services. While Minister Shiyam reported an improvement in fishing activity since April 14, he acknowledged that the sector still faces significant hurdles. Fish processors and exporters are currently struggling with high air freight costs, which threaten the profitability of the industry. Despite these logistics challenges, the Minister confirmed that exports continue to flow. The initiative serves as a critical buffer for the Maldives' fishing sector, which remains a cornerstone of the national economy. By stabilizing fuel costs, the government intends to safeguard the livelihoods of thousands of fishers while ensuring food security and economic stability in the face of Middle Eastern unrest.
