Maldives Expands Tourism Capacity With Over 1,000 New Beds This Year

The Maldives has expanded its tourism infrastructure by adding over 1,000 beds to its total capacity so far this year, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. As of September 5, the total number of operational beds in the tourism sector reached 68,544. This marks an increase of 1,069 beds compared to the year-end figure of 67,475 recorded in December last year, signaling continued growth and investment in the nation's primary economic driver. The expanded capacity is distributed across various accommodation types. Resorts remain the dominant sector with 45,891 beds, followed by guesthouses with 17,268. Additionally, the safari fleet accounts for 3,481 beds, while city hotels provide 2,654 beds. This growth in capacity supports a diverse landscape of tourism establishments. Currently, the Maldives hosts 179 resorts, 956 guesthouses, 172 safari vessels, and 16 hotels, reflecting a strategic mix of high-end luxury and community-based tourism. The increase in bed capacity aligns with the country's strong tourist arrival numbers. Recent figures reveal that the Maldives has welcomed 1.4 million visitors. The distribution of these guests mirrors the available infrastructure, with 1 million tourists opting for resort stays, 300,000 choosing guesthouses, 33,513 staying in hotels, and 26,550 experiencing the islands via safari boats. This steady expansion of accommodation options underscores the Maldives' commitment to meeting rising global demand while diversifying the types of experiences available to international travelers.
