Maldives Expo 2026 Sees Record Growth With Over 800 Business Applications

World ·
The Maldives Expo 2026 has recorded a surge in interest, receiving over 800 proposals following the September 10 deadline. This represents a four-fold increase in participants compared to last year, signaling a growing appetite among local entrepreneurs to showcase their businesses on a national stage. Areesha Moosa, Assistant Director of Strategic Development and Regional Services at the Business Center Corporation (BCC), noted during the PSM News “Raajje Miadhu” programme that the majority of these applications came from individual participants. The event has expanded its scope, now accepting entries across 73 different categories, with the BCC confirming that every category has received applications. Beyond business growth, the expo is expanding its geographical reach. BCC Assistant General Manager Mohamed Eeman Ahmed revealed that seven districts will participate this year, up from five in the previous edition. A key strategic goal for 2026 is the integration of Maldivian businesses into the global market, building on last year's success in connecting local entrepreneurs with international partners through a dedicated foreign participants' district. In a move to foster youth entrepreneurship, the BCC has introduced a new age limit, allowing participants as young as 13 to apply. The event, which runs from October 23 to 31, serves as a critical pillar of the government's economic strategy to promote and market indigenous goods and services. Complementing the commercial activities, the BCC has opened registrations for a high-stakes cultural competition aimed at reviving traditional Maldivian arts. The contest will feature performances such as bandiyaa jehun, langiri, and thaara jehun. To encourage competitiveness and artistic excellence, substantial cash prizes are on offer, with first-place winners receiving approximately USD 4,855, second place USD 3,237, and third place USD 1,618. A special reward of USD 1,618 will also be granted to the most popular team. Interested parties can register for the cultural competitions via the BCC's social media channels. The deadline for these applications is September 17, 2026.
