Maldives Eyes More Global Digital Platforms to Diversify Economy Beyond Tourism
World ·
The Maldivian government plans to introduce additional global digital platforms to support the nation's youth and entrepreneurs, following the recent launch of PayPal services. Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced that the government is actively working to modernize the economy by integrating popular international digital tools.
PayPal was officially launched in the Maldives on June 15 through a strategic partnership between the government and Ooredoo Maldives. The service is accessible via Ooredoo’s m-Faisaa platform, utilizing an inward remittance permit issued to the telecommunications provider in 2025.
Minister Saeed emphasized that diversifying the economic landscape is critical for sustainable growth, stating that the Maldives cannot rely solely on the tourism sector to reach higher economic milestones. He noted that the development of a robust digital economy is a primary objective of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, with a specific target for the digital sector to contribute 15 percent of the national GDP by 2030.
According to the Minister, there is a growing level of confidence among major international technology firms regarding the Maldivian market. This shift in perception is expected to attract more global players to the archipelago, further accelerating the country's technological transition.
The introduction of PayPal is seen as a pivotal step in integrating the Maldives into the global marketplace. By enabling seamless international payments and money transfers, the platform allows local businesses and freelancers to sell products and services to a global audience and receive payments with greater efficiency. This move is expected to empower Maldivian entrepreneurs and foster a new generation of digital exports, reducing the nation's dependence on traditional industries.
