The Maldives has recorded an extraordinary 90.3% increase in fish exports during the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year. According to the Maldives Monetary Authority's latest statistics, the country exported 57,318 metric tons of fish from January through August, a substantial rise from the 30,125 metric tons shipped during the corresponding timeframe in the previous year.
This remarkable growth reflects a major strengthening of the nation's fishing industry, which remains a cornerstone of the Maldivian economy. The surge was particularly pronounced in fresh and chilled fish exports, which reached 51,624 metric tons—a dramatic 106.7% increase from the 24,980 metric tons exported last year.
Processed fish exports also showed strong performance, growing by 64.7% to 1,118.8 metric tons compared to 679.2 metric tons previously. As fish products continue to dominate the country's export portfolio, the current administration has prioritized increasing fisheries revenue and expanding the sector's contribution to the national economy.
