Maldives Forecasts Heavy Rainfall and Higher Temperatures Through September
Politics ·
The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned residents and visitors to prepare for a significant increase in rainfall and above-average temperatures over the next four months.
According to a formal announcement released via social media, precipitation levels across a large portion of the archipelago are expected to rise substantially above seasonal norms from June through September. This extended period of instability marks a shift in the typical weather patterns for the region.
The transition has already begun in several parts of the country. Over the past week, the previously bright and hot conditions have shifted toward overcast skies and persistent rain showers. Adding to the complexity of the forecast, the agency noted that temperatures across all regions are expected to remain above normal, creating a period of humid, oppressive heat alongside the heavy rains.
To manage the immediate risks, the Met Office has begun issuing targeted weather warnings for specific atolls, highlighting the potential for severe thunderstorms and torrential downpours. These conditions often lead to localized flash flooding and significant disruptions to maritime and land travel, which are critical for inter-island connectivity.
Authorities are strongly urging the public to remain vigilant and stay updated through official weather bulletins. Residents are advised to take proactive precautions to secure their properties against flooding and to plan travel with caution as the nation enters this volatile weather phase.
