Maldives Government Opens Applications for Land and Flats Under Revised Housing Policy
Politics ·
The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure in the Maldives has announced that applications for land and flats under the government's 'Housing for All' policy will open on 15 January and remain available until 14 April. This follows revisions to the housing programme guidelines after public consultations led by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Key changes include expanded eligibility: families with children under 18 allocated a one-bedroom government housing unit can now apply for a three-bedroom flat, and those with a two-bedroom unit and children of both sexes under 18 may also upgrade if they vacate their current property. Additionally, applicants whose spouses own land or homes outside the Greater Male' area can still apply. The programme allocates 15,000 residential plots across urban, non-urban, and special priority categories. Flats are reserved for specific groups, including families with disabilities, elderly dependents, or minor children. The Ministry emphasised the policy's aim to ensure social security and equitable housing access for all Maldivians.
