Politics ·
The Maldivian government has submitted a bill to the People's Majlis to amend the Penal Code (Qanoonul Uqoobath) to classify acts that harm the state's economic security, treason, and incitement of hatred against a religion or nation as serious crimes. The bill was presented on behalf of the government by ruling PNC member Abdulla Rifau, MP for Maafannu Dhekunu constituency.
The proposed amendment introduces a special chapter in the Penal Code defining crimes against economic security, including knowingly damaging critical infrastructure, computer systems, or disrupting essential services. It also criminalizes treasonous acts such as waging war against the Maldives or supporting an enemy.
Additionally, the bill includes a new section on 'Qatlul Aam' (genocide) in line with international conventions, making it a criminal offense. The legislation also covers hate crimes targeting groups based on nationality, race, descent, or religion, including murder, severe physical or mental harm, and incitement.
The bill stipulates that anyone convicted of these offenses would face penalties and be permanently barred from holding any state position or employment.
