The Maldivian government has pledged to maintain steady supplies of oil, gas, and essential food items, despite rising global tensions and economic challenges, Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed announced. This commitment comes as escalating conflict in the Middle East, involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, has triggered retaliatory strikes impacting Gulf nations and driven up global crude prices. Minister Saeed noted that beyond immediate price spikes, the international oil supply chain faces complex challenges and broader geopolitical constraints. To mitigate impacts, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration has executed strategic measures, including aggressive management of national oil reserves by the State Trading Organisation (STO). The efficacy of these steps was highlighted by the arrival of two dedicated oil shipments last week, secured through methodical procurement and formal agreements with international suppliers. While global market surges have necessitated domestic price adjustments, the government is intervening to cushion the financial blow. Citizens will be shielded from extreme volatility as a portion of escalating costs is subsidized using STO's profit margins.
