Maldives High Commission in Colombo Celebrates 61st Independence Day with Sri Lankan Dignitaries

The Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka hosted a high-profile reception in Colombo to commemorate the 61st Independence Day of the Republic of Maldives. The event served as a diplomatic platform to reinforce the longstanding political and social ties between the two neighboring nations. Over 500 guests attended the celebration, including a distinguished assembly of Sri Lankan ministers, provincial governors, senior military officials, and members of the diplomatic corps. Also present were prominent figures from the business community, reflecting the strong economic linkages between the two countries. Addressing the gathering, Sri Lanka's Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, extended official greetings to the government and people of the Maldives. Minister Jayatissa emphasized the deep historical connection between the two nations, specifically noting that the agreement recognizing the Maldives' independence was signed on Sri Lankan soil, cementing the country's role in the Maldives' sovereign history. Maldives' High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, highlighted the current trajectory of bilateral relations. He identified President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to Sri Lanka in May as a pivotal milestone that has elevated diplomatic ties to a new level of cooperation. The High Commissioner also expressed gratitude to both Maldivian and Sri Lankan companies for their contributions to the event's success. Beyond the diplomatic proceedings, the reception celebrated Maldivian identity through a series of cultural showcases. The highlights included a vibrant Boduberu procession and various traditional performances, all delivered by Maldivian students and expatriates currently residing in Sri Lanka.
