Maldives Honors 3,900 Nurses as Backbone of National Healthcare System

Politics ·
The Maldives joined the global community in celebrating International Nurses Day, honoring the 3,907 healthcare professionals who provide critical medical services across the archipelago's hospitals, clinics, and health centers. Data from the Ministry of Health reveals a diverse workforce, with women comprising the vast majority of the profession at 3,593, while 314 men serve as nurses. The workforce is a blend of local and international talent, with Maldivian citizens making up 64 percent of the staff and foreign nationals accounting for the remaining 36 percent. Distribution of care remains balanced between the urban center and rural islands. Approximately 51 percent of nurses—1,989 professionals—are stationed in the Greater Male’ area, while 49 percent, totaling 1,918 nurses, are deployed across the various atolls to ensure essential healthcare reaches remote populations. To modernize the sector, the government implemented the 2018 Nursing Framework. This policy aimed to make the profession more sustainable by revising salary structures and establishing clearer career pathways. The framework has introduced specialized training in high-demand fields, including neurocare and cardiac care, allowing nurses to elevate their clinical expertise. Beyond technical training, the government is strengthening the licensing system to maintain rigorous professional standards. There is also a strategic push to integrate nurses into senior administrative roles and health policy formulation, ensuring those on the front lines have a voice in how healthcare is managed. This year's global theme, "Our Nurses, Our Future—Empowered Nurses Save Lives," underscores the government's commitment to investing in nursing as a primary pillar of public health. By transforming nursing into a respected career with clear growth opportunities, the state aims to build a more resilient health system capable of improving the overall well-being of the nation.
