Maldives Hosts First South Asian Anaesthesiologists’ Congress to Strengthen Regional Healthcare

The Maldives has hosted the 15th International Congress of Anaesthesiologists of SAARC Countries for the first time, gathering 220 medical professionals in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll. Held on August 14 and 15, the two-day event brought together experts from across the South Asian region to share scientific research and discuss the latest developments in anaesthesiology. Jointly organized by the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare, the Maldivian Association of Anaesthesiologists, and local hospitals, the congress served as a strategic platform for regional collaboration. The event opened with a symbolic flag-raising ceremony and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque honoring the late Dr. Ibrahim Umar Manik, the first Maldivian anaesthesiologist, recognizing his pioneering contributions to the field. Addressing the opening ceremony, Director General of Health Services Dr. Ahmed Ashraf emphasized that the gathering should transcend a typical academic meeting to become a genuine opportunity for collective learning. Dr. Ashraf noted that SAARC nations face strikingly similar challenges within their respective healthcare systems, asserting that sharing knowledge and discussing localized solutions is essential for strengthening medical infrastructure across the region. Dr. Assad Ahmed Shaheed, President of the Maldivian Association of Anaesthesiologists, expressed gratitude to neighboring countries for their support. He highlighted the critical need to advance the field of anaesthesiology within the Maldives, noting that the expertise shared by regional specialists is invaluable for the professional development of local practitioners. Beyond the main conference, visiting specialists conducted specialized workshops at a hospital in the Malé area on August 14. These sessions were designed to facilitate human resource development and provide hands-on training for Maldivian medical staff. The 15th Congress follows a hiatus after the 2022 event; while Bangladesh was originally slated to host the 2024 gathering, the event was relocated to the Maldives. The final tally of participants included 190 experienced anaesthesiology professionals, marking a significant milestone for the Maldives in hosting high-level regional medical summits.
