Maldives Immigration Launches Legacy Exhibition and Upgrades Digital Passport Services

Maldives Immigration has unveiled the "Immigration Walk of Legacy" exhibition and introduced a suite of service enhancements designed to modernize passport processing for Maldivian citizens. The initiatives were officially launched during a ceremony at the Maldives Immigration headquarters by the Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Ihusaan. The upgrades aim to streamline passport services by leveraging digital technology to reduce public inconvenience and accelerate delivery times. Recognizing the digital divide, the institution has introduced dedicated support for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. This specialized assistance includes help with online applications and the capture of passport photographs, ensuring that vulnerable groups are not left behind by the shift toward digitalization. To further improve the citizen experience, a new dedicated Information Counter and an expanded, comfortable waiting area have been established. These changes are part of a broader strategic effort to transition toward a more efficient, technology-driven public service model. Parallel to these service upgrades, the "Immigration Walk of Legacy" now serves as a permanent installation on the first floor of the headquarters at Velaanaage. The exhibition traces the institution's evolution from its founding in 1950 to the present day, offering a chronological journey through seven decades of border management and organizational growth. The display includes a "From the Archive" section, featuring historical photographs and personal accounts from former officers. Visitors can explore the expansion of services across the atolls via detailed maps, as well as galleries highlighting the institution's core mandates in intelligence, law enforcement, and visa services. The event was attended by several retired officers and long-serving staff members, some of whom have dedicated over 28 years to the department. Maldives Immigration stated that the exhibition serves as a tribute to the commitment of the personnel who transformed the agency into its current modern form. By blending a celebration of its history with a commitment to future technological integration, Maldives Immigration seeks to balance institutional heritage with the demands of a modern, digital-first society.
