President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified amendments to the Drugs Act, introducing the death penalty for drug trafficking. The amendments, passed by Parliament, will take effect in three months. The reforms include stricter penalties, enhanced law enforcement powers, and improved treatment programs for addiction. The death penalty applies to trafficking Schedule 1 drugs like cannabis and heroin if certain thresholds are exceeded. Additionally, life sentences will now mean imprisonment for the convict's natural life, and clemency or parole will not be allowed for such offenses.
