Maldives Installs 783 kW of Solar Systems in Household Energy Push

The Maldives has installed 783 kilowatts of solar photovoltaic systems in households across 10 atolls this year, marking significant progress in the nation's renewable energy transition. The Ministry of Tourism and Environment announced the milestone under the household solar programme launched in January.
The initiative, championed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, aims to reduce household electricity bills and decrease dependence on fuel-generated power. The programme began with installations in Filladhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, and has now expanded nationwide.
The government plans to add another 1.5 megawatts of solar systems and is opening tenders for an additional 7 megawatts. Under the first phase, a total of 3 megawatts will be provided to households through utility companies operating on installment plans and net-metering principles.
The programme will directly benefit 748 households, significantly cutting public electricity expenses while maximizing renewable energy use. This represents a crucial step toward the government's target of sourcing 33 percent of the nation's electricity from renewable sources.
