Maldives Issues Severe Weather Warning, Advises Caution
Local News ·
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a severe weather warning for the next 24 hours, advising the public and authorities to take necessary precautions. According to MET, the western monsoon is intensifying and heavy rain clouds forming to the west of the Maldives are spreading over the atolls. A depression in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to some islands.
In the next two to three days, strong winds and unusually rough seas are expected, particularly in the northern and central atolls. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has also urged sea travelers to exercise extreme caution. They advise that before departing, travelers should share their trip details with relevant authorities and check the latest weather information. Additionally, vessels should ensure safety equipment such as life jackets, communication devices, and bilge pumps are in good working order. The MNDF further calls on vessels not to exceed their cargo limits and to ensure that boats anchored in lagoons are properly secured.
