Maldives' Largest Mosque to be Completed Within Two Years in Hulhumalé

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially laid the foundation stone for Jami' Al-Sultan Muhammad bin Abdullah, which is set to become the largest mosque in the Maldives. Located in Hulhumalé Phase II, the landmark project is expected to be completed within the next two years. Speaking at the foundation ceremony, Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed revealed that the vision for the mosque and an accompanying Islamic Civilisation Centre dates back 20 years. While the project was originally conceived as part of the city's early urban planning, previous administrations had not succeeded in breaking ground until now. Minister Shaheem emphasized that the project moved forward following a directive from President Muizzu during this year's Presidential Address. He attributed the current progress to the President's personal commitment to seeing the development realized. “Our aim is to complete the mosque component within two years at most,” Minister Shaheem stated, noting that the team is working with determination to ensure the structure is finished as quickly as possible. The Minister also clarified that associated waqf (endowment) projects are being handled separately to satisfy specific legal requirements. Beyond its role as a place of worship, the site will house the Islamic Civilisation Centre. This facility is designed to document the historical arrival of Islam in the Maldives and trace the evolution of Islamic civilization across the archipelago over the last 900 years. Describing the development as a project of national importance, Minister Shaheem highlighted that such an ambitious undertaking requires collective effort. He expressed gratitude to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the Maldives for their critical support in bringing the project to fruition.
