Maldives Launches 'Digital for All' Initiative to Achieve Developed Nation Status by 2040

The Maldives has launched a comprehensive three-year "Digital for All" initiative designed to equip every citizen with the digital skills necessary to transform the archipelago into a developed nation by 2040. Announced by the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, the program is a central pillar of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s "Maldives 2.0" vision. This strategic roadmap aims to transition the country into a fully digital, high-income society by modernizing how citizens learn, work, and interact with technology. Minister Shafeeu emphasized that the initiative focuses on a fundamental shift in mindset and capability. He stated that by evolving the training and understanding of the populace, the government intends to create a digitally savvy generation capable of competing on a global scale. To ensure nationwide reach, the government is establishing a digital literacy network through partnerships with a wide array of stakeholders. Key collaborators include universities, colleges, local councils, and specialized bodies such as the Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA), the National Institute of Education, MINDCo, and the Maldives National Skill Development Authority. Beyond economic growth, the initiative carries a strong mandate for social inclusion. By integrating digital systems into vocational and educational institutions, the government aims to dismantle barriers for individuals with physical or mental disabilities. This digital transition is expected to expand opportunities for remote work, allowing residents across the scattered atolls to participate fully in the national economy regardless of their geographic location. Minister Shafeeu concluded that fostering a digitally competent society is a collective national responsibility. He stressed that success depends on a coordinated effort involving various ministries, state agencies, and private sector partners to ensure no citizen is left behind in the digital age.
