Maldives Launches Island Pilot Projects to Boost National Food Security

World ·
The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources is launching agricultural pilot projects across several large islands to lay the groundwork for a proposed agricultural economic zone at Fushidhiggarufalhu. The initiative is a strategic move by the government to reduce import dependency and strengthen food security across the archipelago. This development follows an agreement signed in 2024 between the Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone (MIDFZ) and the China Harbour Engineering Company. The partnership aims to establish a massive economic zone dedicated to boosting domestic food production through modern infrastructure and reclaimed land. State Minister Ahmed Hassan Didi revealed that while planning and proposals for the mega-project are complete, the government is currently making technical and administrative adjustments following a change in the project's designated location. To maintain momentum, the ministry is implementing preparatory farming programs on larger islands to build local capacity and provide a practical framework for the larger development. "We will work on acquiring land by entering into long-term agreements with island councils," Minister Didi explained, noting that the projects will utilize smart farming and vertical farming techniques. Initial opportunities have already been extended to Kaashidhoo and Kelaa. However, the Minister acknowledged delays in some areas where local Land Use Plans lack designated agricultural zones, necessitating legislative amendments. Beyond the Fushidhiggarufalhu project, the government is expanding its agricultural footprint with separate initiatives planned for the northern region, Laamu Atoll, Addu City, and Fuvahmulah City. These efforts align with the priority of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration to ensure a sustainable food supply for the nation. Once fully implemented, the Fushidhiggarufalhu project will be a cornerstone of the nation's agricultural strategy. The comprehensive development plan includes extensive land reclamation, the construction of an industrial agricultural park, and the establishment of dedicated passenger and cargo terminals to facilitate the efficient movement of produce.
