A modernised weather application and the Met Office's website have been officially launched, providing real-time meteorological information to the public across the Maldives. The new tools were unveiled by Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shariif at a ceremony held in Meerumaag. The minister stated that the app and website were designed to offer a complete and user-friendly resource, allowing the public to easily access the most accurate and detailed weather information daily. The app is available in both Dhivehi and English. While the previous application covered only five stations nationwide, the latest version provides updates for 516 locations, including industrial islands, airports, residential islands, and atoll islands. Minister Ali Shariif highlighted that the application was developed by a Maldivian team, taking into account past experiences and public needs. The Chinese government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) provided assistance in designing the application. Speaking at the ceremony, Adnan Saeed, Representative of UNDP in the Maldives, noted that the new app and website will quickly deliver official weather forecasts, maritime-related information, and weather warnings to those who need them most. He emphasised that the platform has been designed for use by all segments of society. Weather forecasts via the application will be updated every three hours. Additionally, conditions across different parts of the country can be viewed through Wind Radar Systems installed in various regions. The app will also deliver notifications and messages during meteorological disasters, including alert information, radar and satellite images, and flooding updates.
