Maldives Launches National Campaign to Restore Traditional Values of Respect and Manners

The Maldivian government has initiated a series of public consultations to develop a national campaign aimed at reviving the culture of respect and good manners across the archipelago. The initiative was launched at the special request of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as part of a broader strategy to preserve and strengthen the nation's identity. Organized by the Office of National Identity under the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage, the consultation process began with an inaugural meeting opened by Minister Heena Waleed. The government aims to gather diverse ideas and recommendations from across society to shape the campaign, ensuring it reflects the needs and aspirations of all citizens. Minister Waleed highlighted that historical accounts from foreign visitors frequently praised Maldivians for their exceptional courtesy and hospitality. However, she noted that these admirable customs have gradually faded from daily life. According to the Minister, restoring these values and building a society where citizens mutually value one another is a collective responsibility shared by every Maldivian. To ensure a comprehensive approach, the consultation process will seek input from a wide array of stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, community groups, political parties, and various social clubs from across the Maldives. This movement aligns with President Muizzu's stated goal of reversing the erosion of national identity. Since taking office, the administration has launched several initiatives to promote the Dhivehi language and conduct research into the country's history to revive lost aspects of cultural heritage. President Muizzu has emphasized that the success of these cultural restorations depends on the cooperation of civil servants and public institutions. He noted that these entities have already begun providing the necessary support to integrate these traditional values back into the fabric of modern Maldivian governance and social interaction.
