The Maldives Ministry of Health has introduced the 28th National Standard for the Treatment of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim unveiled the new standard at an inauguration ceremony, highlighting its focus on sustainable, safe, and reliable treatment for NCDs, which account for 70% of deaths in the Maldives. The standard aims to enhance early prevention and high-quality care for diseases such as cancer, kidney issues, and other NCDs. Minister Ibrahim emphasized that adherence to the standard will improve healthcare quality, reduce premature deaths, and assist healthcare professionals in making faster, more informed clinical decisions. Additionally, the standard will streamline the cost-effective procurement of imported medicines and medical equipment. The initiative received support from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific, and the Government of Japan.
