Maldives Moves to Criminalize Gambling and Gambling Facilities
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Wednesday that the Maldives will push legislative amendments to criminalize gambling and the operation of gambling facilities. The decision was revealed in a post on X, where the President stated that the government has submitted a bill to the Parliament to amend the Penal Code accordingly. The Maldives blocked betting websites last year, but legal loopholes have made it difficult for law enforcement to tackle gambling activities, particularly through online platforms. The move comes amid growing concerns over the rise in gambling-related activities. The Parliament, currently in recess, will reopen in February to deliberate on the proposed amendments.
