Maldives MP Proposes Therapy Card System to Support Children with Disabilities
Politics ·
In a bid to enhance support for children with disabilities in the Maldives, MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) has urged President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to introduce a therapy card system. The proposal aims to regulate the rising costs of therapy services and strengthen accountability and accessibility. Kudu highlighted that the government is currently spending significant amounts on therapy clinics, and a structured system would streamline services and ensure better outcomes for children. The therapy card would be non-withdrawable and operate as a two-sided system, preventing billing for unused sessions. Key features of the proposal include issuing the card through the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) in collaboration with the Bank of Maldives (BML), allowing parents to choose registered therapy centres, and requiring progress reports every six months. Kudu emphasized that the proposal draws on successful international models adapted to the Maldives' context.
