Maldives National Anti-Doping Agency to Operate Independently
Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Maldives National Anti-Doping Agency will operate under an independent board, marking a significant shift in the country’s approach to anti-doping policies. The decision, made under Article 116(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, was formalized through a Presidential Directive. This change comes following the First Amendment to the Sports Act, enacted on 19 May last year, which aims to ensure equality and fairness in sports.
Previously administered by the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, the agency will now function autonomously, free from government influence. This move aligns the Maldives with international standards set by the UNESCO Convention and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu emphasized that the reform will enhance fair opportunities for athletes and bring the Maldives in line with global anti-doping practices.
The UNESCO Convention, adopted at the Second World Conference on Doping in Copenhagen in 2003, has been signed by 191 countries, including the Maldives on 14 October. Under this agreement, countries are required to comply with anti-doping policies and share relevant information with WADA.
This reform is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the Maldives' sports sector according to international best practices, ensuring national sports activities meet globally accepted standards.
