The Maldives has been nominated for the World Travel Awards' 'World's Leading Destination' category for 2026, marking the seventh consecutive year the country has competed for the prestigious title. The nomination was announced by Visit Maldives, the national tourism marketing authority, which confirmed that voting is open until 30 October 2026.
The Maldives first won the award in 2020 and has successfully defended it for six consecutive years. The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, recognise excellence in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries globally. Over the years, the Maldives has also won numerous regional and international awards at the World Travel Awards ceremonies.
In a social media post, Visit Maldives urged the public to vote for the Maldives to retain the title for a seventh year. The post read: "The Maldives is nominated for World’s Leading Destination 2026 at #WTA2026, with a chance to win for the seventh consecutive year! Help us win the title by voting before 30 October 2026."
