Maldives Opens Applications for Monthly MVR 2,000 Allowance for Thalassemia Patients

Politics ·
Applications are now open for the newly introduced monthly allowance for thalassemia patients in the Maldives. The government announced on Wednesday that individuals living with thalassemia will receive MVR 2,000 per month. The Thalassemia Centre issued the official rules on Thursday, outlining eligibility criteria and payment procedures. The allowance will be provided to patients registered in the Centre’s official registry, with payments beginning next month for accepted applicants. Disbursements will occur before the 10th of every month through the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA). The allowance may be discontinued if the patient no longer requires treatment, formally requests to stop receiving the benefit, or passes away. This initiative fulfills a campaign pledge by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who promised financial aid for thalassemia patients during the presidential election. Additionally, the government plans to arrange free bone marrow transplants for patients and build a dedicated thalassemia hospital, with construction awarded to a Malaysian company.
