Maldives-Pakistan Relations: PM Shehbaz Calls for MoUs to be Converted into Agreements, Direct Flights
Politics ·
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged that Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Pakistan and the Maldives be converted into formal agreements, emphasising that agreements are more robust and trustworthy than MoUs.
Speaking at the Maldives-Pakistan Business Forum held in Pakistan during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's ongoing visit, PM Shehbaz stated that he has always believed that MoUs do not necessarily produce the best results unless they are implemented and transformed into agreements. He called for the existing MoUs between the two countries to be converted into formal agreements as soon as possible.
PM Shehbaz also stressed the importance of establishing direct sea and air routes between Pakistan and the Maldives, stating it is a crucial step that can be achieved if both governments work together.
He noted that a high-level delegation from Pakistan has been decided to be sent to the Maldives to strengthen trade ties. The delegation will include prominent Pakistani businessmen with experience in exporting goods to the Maldives, as well as relevant government ministers and senior officials. The main purpose of this delegation's visit is to explore ways to supply various products needed by the Maldives and to find new trade opportunities.
Furthermore, PM Shehbaz expressed hope that with President Muizzu's visit, a new chapter has opened in bilateral relations and that President Muizzu will make an additional visit to Pakistan within this year.
