MALÉ, Maldives — Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said bilateral trade between the Maldives and Pakistan will be increased to US$200 million within the next two years. Speaking at a joint statement following talks with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Pakistan, PM Shehbaz said the current trade volume between the two countries stands at US$13.9 million. He noted that the discussions covered important matters, including regional and international issues, and that Pakistan would assist in strengthening economic ties as well as in training Maldivians in the defence, education and health sectors. The Prime Minister said Pakistan will give special priority to ensuring the implementation of the 20 MOUs signed between the two countries. Welcoming President Dr. Muizzu was an honour for Pakistan, he said, adding that he has no doubt the relationship between the two countries will further strengthen. “I will work to strengthen trade ties and accelerate the implementation of the MOUs. We are ready to provide assistance to the extent Maldives needs,” the Prime Minister said. The Maldives and Pakistan established political ties 60 years ago. PM Shehbaz described the relationship as close, brotherly and long-standing, highlighting a long history of Pakistani assistance in agriculture, health, urban development and infrastructure sectors.
