Maldives Parliament has approved a government-introduced bill to double the deposit required for appeals against tax assessments by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). The amendment to the Tax Administration Act, moved by Funadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Mamdhooh, would raise the deposit from 25 percent to 50 percent of the disputed tax amount.
The bill was accepted at Tuesday's sitting with 54 votes in favour and 11 against, and has been referred to the Economic Committee. Under current law, anyone appealing to the Tax Appeal Tribunal against a tax amount determined by MIRA must deposit 25 percent of the amount.
