Maldives Parliament Committee Clears Police in Arrest of MP Mauroof Zakir

Politics ·
The Privileges and Conduct Committee of the People's Majlis has concluded that the arrest of MP Mauroof Zakir (MDP, Kendhoo constituency) did not violate his parliamentary privileges. The committee reviewed the timeline of events and evidence regarding his arrest during a fishermen's protest on Fishermen's Day 2025. The protest was organized by the Bodu Kanneli Fishermen's Union (BKKU). MP Zakir had filed a complaint claiming that his arrest was illegal and that police used excessive force. However, after examining the available information, the committee found no evidence that police actions infringed upon the MP's privileges. The committee's report was finalized on Thursday.
