Maldives Parliament passes bill on privileges of diplomatic missions
Politics ·
The Maldives Parliament has passed a bill on the privileges of diplomatic missions, consular posts, and international organizations. The bill was submitted by Mohamed Dawood, the Member of Parliament for the Kulhudhuffushi North constituency, and was approved with the votes of 43 members who took part in the vote.
The first reading of the bill took place yesterday, and the initial debate was held today. The bill seeks to establish a strong legal framework under which privileges granted in the Maldives to diplomatic missions, consular posts, specialized agencies of the United Nations, and other related parties are defined, in line with the international treaties to which the Maldives is a party. It also sets out the scope of these privileges and the rules and procedures for granting them.
MPs who spoke on the bill described it as important for the country's foreign history and for strengthening the Maldives' foreign policy. Hassan Mufeed, the MP for Milandhoo constituency, said the bill would provide legal authority without harming the nation's independence, calling it "a complete law." Other members from the PNC also noted that the bill would strengthen trust in missions operating in the country.
The bill includes provisions detailing consular relations, the duties of consular officers or staff, and their responsibilities.
