Maldives Parliament Rejects Motion to Disclose Eagle Hills Agreement Details
Politics ·
The Maldives People's Majlis has rejected a motion calling for the full disclosure of the commercial agreement between the government and Eagle Hills for the Voter Front Marina project in Rasmalé. The motion, submitted by MP Mickail Ahmed Naseem (Galolhu Dhekunu), was defeated by a vote of 45 to 10.
During the debate, ruling PNC members defended the project. MP Mohamed Aslam (Bileydhoo) stated there was no need to fear that Jewish people would settle in the area, citing the country's history of jihad. Meanwhile, MDP members argued that there was no reason to keep the agreement secret, alleging that the government and PNC are under Eagle Hills' influence.
A separate proposal by independent MP Abdulhannan Aboobakuru, aligned with the PNC, to amend parliamentary rules so that motions are put to a vote before debate, was also raised. MDP lawmakers said this rule change demonstrates the extent of Eagle Hills' influence over the government.
MP Mickail accused the government of attempting to give 500 hectares of land in Rasmalé to a foreign company for 99 years, contradicting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's earlier statement that no foreign entity would receive even a grain of Maldivian land.
