The 53rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) began today at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The two-week session, which will run until November 13, 2026, will review the human rights records of 14 UN member states: Antigua and Barbuda, Eswatini, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Papua New Guinea, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Suriname, Tajikistan, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the United States. The Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Maldives will actively participate, in line with the government's key policies and priorities, submitting constructive proposals to advance human rights in all countries under review. The Maldivian delegation is led by Dr. Salma Rashid, the Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, and includes Councilor Adam Hamid, Councilor Amina Shifaah Ibrahim, and Second Secretary Aishath Rayha of the Permanent Mission. The fourth cycle of the UPR Working Group, which convenes three times a year, began in November 2022 and will continue until the end of 2027. The UPR provides a platform to assess the human rights situation of all UN member states, share progress in fulfilling commitments, and receive recommendations for improvement.
