Maldives Partners with ICCD to Develop Premium Halal Tourism Segment
World ·
The Maldives is moving to establish halal tourism as a formal segment of its national tourism industry following strategic discussions between the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) and the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development (ICCD).
VMC Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Abdulla Yasir met with ICCD Secretary-General Sheikh Yousef Hasan Khalawi to outline the development of specialized halal tourism products, services, and guest experiences. The initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision to diversify the country's tourism portfolio and cater to a growing global demand for faith-based travel.
As part of the preliminary phase, VMC has begun assessing the sector by identifying resorts and hotels interested in offering halal-aligned services. The corporation is exploring international certification pathways and service standards to ensure the Maldives remains competitive in the premium halal market. By integrating these standards, the Maldives aims to merge its existing reputation for luxury and sustainability with the specific needs of Muslim travelers.
During the meeting, Sheikh Yousef Hasan Khalawi shared international expertise on organizing major halal-focused events, suggesting that knowledge exchange and industry engagement would be critical for the Maldives' success. The two organizations also discussed the potential for hosting high-value, halal-centric tourism events within the archipelago to attract high-spending visitors.
“Developing halal tourism is one of the key priorities for Visit Maldives Corporation,” Yasir stated, emphasizing the potential to create premium experiences tailored to the requirements of Muslim travelers.
VMC intends to maintain an ongoing dialogue with industry stakeholders to determine the most effective approaches for implementing these services. This collaboration with the ICCD marks a strategic step toward diversifying the economic drivers of the tourism sector, ensuring that the Maldives remains a versatile destination for a wider array of international travelers.
