Maldives Partners With Shanghai University to Advance Culture and Heritage Education

The Maldives is seeking to bolster its capacity for cultural preservation through a potential partnership with Shanghai University in China. The discussions focused on expanding educational opportunities and human resource development specifically tailored to the fields of arts, culture, and heritage. Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed led the talks during her official visit to China. The collaboration aims to leverage Shanghai University's established expertise in history and heritage preservation, which the institution has cultivated since 1994 under the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. This initiative aligns with the Maldivian government's strategic priority to intensify research into the nation's history and ensure its preservation for future generations. A key component of this effort is the recently introduced Signature Scholarship, the largest grant of its kind, designed to encourage specialized academic study in heritage and historical research. Beyond academic partnerships, the government is aggressively pursuing the conservation of tangible history. Central to these efforts is the bid to include the Maldives' unique coral stone mosques on the permanent UNESCO World Heritage List, recognizing their architectural and spiritual significance. Furthermore, the Ministry is implementing a localized history project across three islands in Boduthiladhunmathi. Dedicated to the memory of Ghazi Bandaarain, the project aims to make historical data more accessible to both local residents and international tourists. By transforming historical sites into educational hubs, the government intends to showcase the richness of Maldivian identity and the events that shaped the archipelago. These combined efforts—ranging from international academic cooperation to local site preservation—reflect a comprehensive strategy to professionalize the heritage sector while promoting the Maldives' cultural legacy on a global stage.
