Maldives Pension Office Pays Out $11.24 Million in August Retirement Benefits
World ·
The Maldives Pension Administration Office (MPAO) disbursed USD 11.24 million in retirement benefits during August, with the state-funded basic pension comprising the bulk of the expenditures.
Operating on a dual structure, the national system balances the state-funded basic pension—a social safety net designed to protect senior citizens from poverty—with the Maldives Retirement Pension Scheme (MRPS), a contributory savings program for employees.
Data reveals that the basic pension remains the primary driver of payouts. In August alone, the MPAO distributed USD 8.29 million to 27,196 beneficiaries under this scheme.
Additional state retirement benefits, specifically tailored for former employees of state institutions and uniformed services, accounted for USD 1.73 million distributed among 4,861 beneficiaries. Furthermore, USD 280,804 in long-service pensions was paid to 2,216 individuals who served in state institutions for 20 to 40 years. The contributory MRPS disbursed approximately USD 933,204 to 2,749 recipients.
As the elderly population in the Maldives continues to grow, the MPAO is urging workers to prioritize the MRPS. The office emphasized that building robust personal savings during active working years is critical for individual financial security and the long-term sustainability of the national pension system.
The MPAO currently manages funds for over 107,000 members, with the net asset value of the funds under its management reaching USD 1.81 billion.
