Maldives Police Launch Traffic Plan to Reduce Congestion and Improve Road Safety

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed has officially launched the Traffic Enhancement Plan, a strategic initiative designed to streamline road management and increase safety across the capital. The plan outlines a new operational approach for officers stationed in Malé and along the Sinamalé Bridge highway, the critical artery connecting the capital to the airport. During the launch ceremony held at Iskandhar Koshi, Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed emphasized the urgency of finding long-term solutions to the persistent traffic congestion plaguing the city. He stressed that the priority is to reduce the daily inconvenience experienced by the public, particularly in Malé’s busiest commercial districts. To achieve these goals, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has already increased the number of officers deployed for traffic operations. The Commissioner has directed a more visible police presence in high-traffic zones to ensure smoother vehicle flow and a quicker response to road incidents. Following the directive, the Traffic and Road Management Department confirmed that personnel will now be stationed in additional areas across Malé, expanding beyond current monitoring sites. This expansion aims to minimize disruptions and ensure that traffic laws are enforced consistently across the urban center. The department further noted that this is part of a broader growth strategy. Plans are currently underway to further expand traffic policing by increasing the total number of personnel assigned to road management duties in the coming months. The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikury and senior command officers from various functions of the Traffic and Road Management Department, signaling a coordinated effort to modernize the city's approach to urban mobility.
