Maldives Police Report Significant Drop in Gang Crimes Due to New Anti-Gang Act
Local News ·
The Maldives Police Service has announced a significant reduction in gang-related activities and crimes since the implementation of the Prevention of Gang and Other Serious Offences Act in August. Speaking at a press conference in Iskandar Koshi, Superintendent of Police Ishaq Adam, Head of Gang Crimes Enforcement, highlighted the police's proactive measures, including raids on crime-prone areas and monitoring high-risk individuals. The Act has equipped law enforcement with enhanced powers, such as entering private properties without warrants and holding suspects for up to 48 hours without legal representation. Adam also emphasized the need for parental vigilance, noting the presence of children in gang-affected areas. Statistics reveal that since the Act's enforcement, six locations have been raided, 11 suspects arrested, and one group referred to the Prosecutor General’s Office for gang classification. The legislation aims to disrupt gang networks, confiscate illicit assets, and protect juveniles from gang recruitment.
