Maldives Police Service Streamlines Operational Commands to Boost Law Enforcement Efficiency

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced a comprehensive restructuring of its administrative and operational framework, aimed at elevating the quality of law enforcement services and streamlining command structures across the archipelago. The reorganization seeks to achieve more comprehensive outcomes by consolidating core functions—including criminal investigations, intelligence gathering, forensic science, and technology integration—into distinct, focused operational commands. This shift is designed to raise performance standards and ensure a more agile response to evolving security challenges. Under the new strategic hierarchy, the Office of the Commissioner now oversees key pillars such as the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement, Professional Standards, and the National Intelligence Service. To balance specialized expertise with local presence, the MPS has integrated Central Investigations with four primary geographic commands: Malé, Hulhumalé, Northern, and Southern Police. Additionally, technical capabilities are now centralized under Service Development, Service Support, and Digital Data and Technology. This administrative overhaul marks a significant departure from the model implemented on October 1, 2025. In an effort to reduce bureaucracy and foster better collaboration, the number of operational commands has been reduced from 17 to 14. Officials stated that this consolidation will allow the force to deliver services more intimately to the public and optimize the use of available resources. The restructuring comes in response to changes in the national peace and security environment and an increasing demand for frontline policing roles. The MPS confirmed that practical implementation is currently underway, which includes the appointment of officers to newly defined positions and the modification of internal management policies to align with the new framework.
