Maldives Police to Launch Drone First Responder Service for Faster Emergency Response

The Maldives Police Service will introduce a 'Drone as a First Responder' system next year, aiming to drastically reduce response times and improve situational awareness during emergencies. The announcement was made by Ali Ihusaan, the Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, during celebrations marking the 93rd anniversary of the police service. Under the new initiative, drones will be dispatched immediately upon the report of an incident. These aircraft will provide live video feeds directly to the Police Command and Control Centre and to officers en route to the scene. This real-time intelligence is designed to bypass common delays caused by urban traffic congestion in Malé or the inherent challenges of sea travel between islands. Minister Ihusaan emphasized that the technology will allow officers to assess the severity and nature of an incident before they even arrive, ensuring a more effective and targeted response. This move is part of a broader government strategy to modernize policing and enhance the quality of public safety services across the archipelago. Beyond the drone program, the government is investing in several critical infrastructure upgrades. Work has already begun on a state-of-the-art data centre specifically designed to support police technology and data management. These technical foundations are intended to streamline police operations and secure sensitive information. Furthermore, the 911 Emergency Response Centre will undergo a significant upgrade. The Minister revealed plans to integrate next-generation call-handling technology, which will include real-time caller location tracking and instant access to nearby police camera feeds. These combined efforts reflect the current administration's priority to expand police capabilities by integrating advanced technology, developing human resources, and upgrading infrastructure. By bridging the gap between reporting and arrival, the Maldives Police Service aims to provide a more agile and responsive security framework for all citizens and visitors.
