The Maldives has mobilized more than $2.4 million in humanitarian aid for Sri Lankan communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel announced on Tuesday. The assistance demonstrates the strong fraternal ties between the neighboring nations.
Minister Khaleel revealed the figures during a ceremony marking the handover of proceeds from 'Ceylon aa Eku Dhivehin,' a collaborative telethon organized by PSM and local media outlets. The televised fundraising event alone generated over $800,000 in donations from Maldivians across the country.
'The Maldivian people have shown they respond immediately when neighboring countries face difficulties,' Minister Khaleel stated during the event. 'This overwhelming response proves our solidarity with the Sri Lankan people during this challenging time.'
The comprehensive aid package, scheduled for official handover to the Sri Lankan government later Tuesday, combines multiple sources of support. It includes the telethon proceeds, significant contributions from private businesses, and initial government assistance comprising $50,000 in cash and 25,000 cases of canned tuna fish.
Minister Khaleel emphasized that the Maldives was among the first nations to provide assistance under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's initiative. 'This effort demonstrates that although the Maldives is a small country, we are among the first to help our neighbors in times of need,' he noted, highlighting the nation's commitment to regional cooperation and humanitarian response.
