The Maldives has mobilized more than USD 2.4 million in humanitarian assistance for Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel announced Tuesday. The aid package demonstrates the strong fraternal ties between the two neighboring nations. Minister Khaleel made the announcement during a ceremony handing over proceeds from 'Ceylon aa Eku Dhivehin,' a collaborative telethon organized by PSM and local media outlets. The televised fundraiser alone generated over USD 800,000 through contributions from Maldivians across the country. The comprehensive relief package includes the telethon proceeds, donations from private businesses, and initial government assistance consisting of USD 50,000 in cash and 25,000 cases of canned tuna fish. The assistance will be formally handed over to the Sri Lankan government. Minister Khaleel emphasized that the Maldives was among the first nations to respond to Sri Lanka's need under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's initiative. He noted that while the Maldives is a small country, its people consistently demonstrate their willingness to support neighboring nations during times of crisis. The swift response highlights the Maldivian tradition of extending help when regional partners face natural disasters.
