The Maldives welcomed 161,259 tourists in March 2024, bringing the total visitor count for the first quarter to 643,218, a 1% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
Monthly figures show January with 227,403 arrivals, February with 254,556, and March with 161,259. While January and February saw year-on-year growth, March experienced a decline. The Ministry attributes this drop to significant flight cancellations due to the ongoing war in the Middle East, which disrupted travel patterns.
China led source markets with 94,823 visitors, followed by Russia (79,326), the United Kingdom (61,162), Italy (57,289), and Germany (43,344). These top five countries underscore the Maldives' broad international appeal.
In accommodation preferences, 68.8% of tourists stayed at resorts, while 26.1% chose guesthouses, reflecting the sector's diversity from luxury to budget options.
Regarding arrival methods, 636,916 tourists came by air, and 6,302 by sea, highlighting the critical role of aerial connectivity through Velana International Airport and other gateways.
Tourism remains a cornerstone of the Maldivian economy, supporting jobs and local businesses. The modest 1% growth in early 2024 indicates resilience, but the March dip serves as a reminder of the industry's vulnerability to global geopolitical shocks. Sustainable strategies will be essential for maintaining momentum in the coming months.
