The Maldives achieved a historic milestone in December 2025, recording the highest number of tourist arrivals in a single month, according to official statistics from the Ministry of Tourism. A total of 224,455 tourists visited the archipelago, surpassing the previous monthly record set in February 2024, when 217,392 tourists arrived. This marks an increase of 7,063 visitors compared to the earlier peak. The year-end period traditionally sees a surge in tourism, as airlines, private jets, and holiday travelers flock to the Maldives. This seasonal boost also positively impacts airport-related revenue. In addition to December, tourist arrivals exceeded 200,000 in January and February 2025. Overall, the country experienced a 9.8% increase in arrivals compared to 2024, with an average of 6,155 tourists arriving daily. China remained the top source market with 329,428 visitors, followed by Russia with 278,760 and the United Kingdom with 202,171. Total arrivals for the year reached 2.25 million, falling slightly short of the government’s target of 2.3 million. However, the government remains optimistic, projecting 2.4 million tourist arrivals for 2026. According to Visit Maldives, tourist spending hit a record USD 5.4 billion in 2025, as reported by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). The MMA’s November Economic Situation Report noted a 15.8% increase in tourist expenditure compared to 2024, a significant achievement amidst global and regional economic challenges.
